法特霍姆斯的历史和意义
起源和特性学
The term "fathom" derives from the Old English word "fæðm," meaning "embracing arms" or "outstretched arms." This etymology reflects the traditional method of measurement: the distance from fingertip to fingertip of a man with arms fully extended horizontally. This measurement method made the fathom an early example of an anthropic unit (based on human dimensions).
历史发展
Throughout maritime history, the fathom has been an essential unit for measuring water depth. Ancient civilizations had similar concepts - the Ancient Greeks used the "orguia," which is often translated as "fathom." By the Byzantine period, this unit evolved into two forms: a "simple orguia" (approximately 1.87 meters) and an "imperial orguia" (approximately 2.10 meters).
在传统的英国海事惯例中,不同背景的法特奥姆长度不同:
- 英国上将所定义的法特霍姆为6.08英尺(1.85米)
- The "warship fathom" used in Britain and the United States was exactly 6 feet (1.8 meters)
- 在商船上,一个平面可能是51⁄2英尺
- 在渔船上,它有时测量5到7英尺
法特霍姆的标准化随着1959年的国际院子和磅协议而来,协定正式将法特霍姆定义为6英尺或完全1.8288米.
海洋应用
The fathom's primary use was for measuring water depth. Sailors used "sounding lines" - ropes marked at fathom intervals with a weight at the end - to determine depth. This practice was critical for:
- 沿海水域的安全航行
- 寻找安全锚地
- 避免珊瑚礁和沙滩等水下危险
- 创建海图
Areas of consistent depth were often referred to by their fathom measurement, such as the "Broad Fourteens" or the "Long Forties" in the North Sea.
深度测量之外
水深不仅限于测量水深。 它还为其他海洋目的服务:
- 测量渔线和渔网(通常以300平方英尺捆绑提供商业定线)
- 确定锚线长度(通常为水深单位5-7平方英尺)
- 测量捕鲸鱼的鱼叉线(约150个鱼叉)
- Defining a "shot" of anchor chain (usually 15 fathoms)
文化意义
The fathom has permeated maritime culture and language. The phrase "to fathom" meaning "to understand thoroughly" derives from the idea of measuring depths. The phrase "to deep six" (meaning to discard or dispose of something) refers to the minimum depth of six fathoms required for a burial at sea.
Shakespeare referenced fathoms in "The Tempest" with the famous line "Full fathom five thy father lies," illustrating how this nautical term entered broader cultural expression.
现代使用
虽然世界大多数地区都采用了度量衡系统,现代图表的深度通常以公尺表示,但是在几种情况下仍然使用:
- 美国在许多海图上仍然使用法克图
- 传统的航海家和游乐水手往往更喜欢有历史意义
- 全世界较老的图表仍可参考深度
- 一些地区的捕鱼业继续测量各种设备
Before electronic depth finders, sailors used a technique called "sounding" where they would lower a weighted line marked with fathom points into the water. Some marks were called "deeps" and remained unmarked but were estimated by the user. Water that could be measured with a hand sounding line was referred to as being "in soundings" or "on soundings," while deeper areas beyond the 100-fathom line were called "out of soundings" or "off soundings."
