インチと足の歴史と起源

The inch and foot are units of length in the Imperial and United States customary systems of measurement that have a rich history dating back centuries. The word "inch" comes from the Latin word "uncia," meaning one-twelfth, as it was originally defined as 1/12 of a foot.

In early measurements, the inch was defined by the width of a human thumb. In fact, in many European languages, the word for "inch" is the same as or derived from the word for "thumb." By the 7th century, the inch was already being used in England, as referenced in the Laws of Æthelberht.

One historical definition of the inch from 1324, set by King Edward II of England, defined it as "three grains of barley, dry and round, placed end to end, lengthwise." Similarly, the foot was traditionally based on the length of a man's foot.
